Are engineered hardwood floors sealed?
When you choose engineered hardwood for your home, you’ll find many things that are different, and many the same, as solid hardwood flooring. But we are often asked if engineered wood floors are sealed.
There are different ways to look at this, and we're going to go over a few facts now. Follow along to find out more.
Engineered wood floors information you should know
Some say that engineered flooring isn't real hardwood flooring, but that is not at all true. The top layer, which is constructed of solid hardwood, comes in your choice species, with stain color and sealant added, just like the "real" thing.
Even if you choose an engineered material that comes prefinished, it’s still very beneficial to add sealant. For instance, it helps protect against daily wear, adds a bit of water resistance, and makes cleaning and maintenance a little easier.
You might consider a water-based polyurethane, which dries quickly, is very shiny and smooth, and doesn’t yellow over time. Oil-based urethane is affordable, durable, and easy to maintain, but it takes some time to dry so that you can walk on your new floors thoroughly.
