Can you use engineered hardwood in high-moisture spaces?

Yes. Because engineered hardwood is constructed in a way that makes it more stable and better able to handle water, it can be installed in any grade level of the house.

Many southern homes don’t have basements, per se, but in Louisiana, the first floor is actually on what many consider the second floor. The first floor--the ground floor--which used to be used for storage, much like basements, is now often converted to apartments.


Engineered wood floors are as beautiful as any other hardwood flooring

The only difference is construction. Solid is one slice of timber throughout the thickness. Engineered is layered; at the top is a slice of hardwood, complete with undertones, knots, raised grains, swirls, and wormholes.

Underneath are at least three layers (but preferably more) of authentic hardwood combined with a little resin. Then the layers are placed in a crosswise position which is what gives it stability and the increased ability to handle water.

Facts about engineered flooring

●There’s a little more versatility in installation. It can go in many higher-than-normal moisture areas where solid cannot, including any grade level.
●It doesn't contract and expand to adjust to the weather, so no acclimation is needed.
●The thicker is better. As in any hardwood floors, thickness determines the number of times it can be sanded and refinished. Engineered should not be any less thick than 5/16 inch, and it can go as high as ¾-inch. It can be sanded up to four or five times.
●The most popular species are red and white oak; cherry; maple; hickory and walnut.
●Plank width varies from narrow to wide. Wide planks, which are best for larger rooms, can make a room look light and airy and they can show off the knots and grains. They have a more traditional look. Narrow planks are best for smaller rooms and are more contemporary in appearance.
●Depending on quality, thickness, and proper maintenance. These floors have been known to last up to 80 years.
