LVT Installation
LVT can be installed anywhere in the home except stairs. It can be placed over some existing flooring and on concrete. Four methods of installation are available:
- Glue down tiles are placed on an adhesive that has been spread over the subfloor with a trowel. This is the traditional method of tile installation.
- Self-adhesive tiles come with adhesive on them. The backing is removed and tiles are pressed into place on the subfloor. Tiles can be repositioned, if necessary.
- Click lock tiles connect in tongue and groove fashion to form a floor that floats above the subfloor. No glue is needed to complete the installation.
- Loose lay tiles include plasticizers, which are added to the vinyl for weight as well as durability. The adhesive is needed only for tiles that surround the perimeter of the room.
A vinyl underlayment can be added to any click lock luxury vinyl flooring that is 4mm or thicker. Some brands will come with this specially formulated underlayment, which is often designed with superior sound absorption. The Delta IIC number listed for each product notes the amount of impact noise that is absorbed. The higher the number, the better the soundproofing. The best underlayment is dense, thin, and made with recycled fibers. It also includes antimicrobial properties that stop mold growth. A moisture barrier may be needed in addition to underlayment when installing flooring over concrete. Combination products are available.
