Whether you’re considering installing engineered hardwood flooring or have had it for a long time, there are several questions we often hear with regards to cleaning at our Wholesale Flooring & Granite showroom in Baton Rouge, LA. As such, we’d like to go over them now to help clarify maintenance and the cleaning process in general.
Q: Should I clean engineered wood floors with a mop?
A: The truth is it's best to avoid water when it comes to this type of installation. Sweep with a regular, soft-bristled brush or a microfiber dry mop. If you find your floors are particularly dirty and need deeper cleaning, then dampen your microfiber mop slightly and use it to clean your floors. Above all else, do not use a sopping wet mop – that can damage your installation.
Q: Do my floors need daily or weekly cleaning?
A: In short, as with any other type of flooring, you’ll need to clean your planks as often as needed. However, the more often you sweep, the less likely dirt and grime will build up. As such, it’s best to perform cleaning at least once a week.
Q: What should I do to help keep excess dirt off my engineered floors?
A: Ideally, add mats to each of your entry points. That way, when someone enters your house, they’ll know to wipe their shoes off. As an additional measure, we recommend asking your guests to remove their footwear and leave it at the door.
Q: Is there a particular mat I should get?
A: As long as you choose one that doesn't have a rubber backing, you'll be fine. The problem with rubber backing is that moisture can get trapped underneath it, which could eventually damage your installation.
Q: Do I need to wax my engineered floors?
A: It all depends on which type of engineered wood installation you choose. Some have a finish that can benefit from regular waxing. Before you wax your floors, make sure to consult the manufacturer’s manual or speak to a professional engineered hardwood retailer.
Q: Is it easy for a DIYer to refinish engineered hardwood?
A: Regardless of your skills, it’s always best to hire expert refinishers to ensure the project is successful.
