Choosing the right flooring for your new build or remodeling project, can be a real hassle without a bit of guidance. If you are reading this, we are going to assume that you have already chosen engineered hardwood flooring for the project, and would now like to know how to choose the best engineered hardwood flooring for your needs and budget.
Here are the main things you should look for when you are on the hunt for the finest engineered hardwood floor covering.
Layer Thickness
Engineered flooring is made through a process of layering hardwood materials and affixing them to a solid core. The thickness of these layers carries a lot of weight, when determining the quality of a given example of the type.
A decent engineered floor should have at least three layers to be considered sufficient; but for high traffic areas like the kitchen or living room, the more layers the better!
Choose the Right Core Layer
You're going to want to choose the right core layer for the job to maximize your floor's durability and service life. There are three common core layer materials to choose from, each with their own benefits and drawbacks:
• Plywood:
This core material is easily the most common, and is perfectly serviceable for almost any flooring need. If your floors will be installed in an area like the bathroom or kitchen, where there is likely to be a lot of moisture or standing water, you'll probably want to go with a more water-resistant core. Plywood is still wood, and it is susceptible to all of the same dangers that moisture can bring.
• High-Density Fiberboard (HDF)
This is one of the most durable and long-lasting core materials available when it is layered with alternating layers of plywood. Again, you might want to go with a more water resistant core like fiberglass in rooms with lots of moisture.
• Fiberglass
This is probably the least commonly used material for making cores. While it offers superior resistance to moisture, it is considerably less stable than HDF or plywood.
